چکیده

Hazard Avoidance is a key technology for a safe landing of future planetary missions. During Hazard Avoidance, sensors and computers onboard the lander are used to detect hazards in the landing zone, autonomously select the most suitable region for landing, and generate the trajectory that retargets the lander to the safer landing site. In this paper, visionbased hazard avoidance algorithms are briefly described, and the results of testing under two realistic simulated scenarios representing a landing on Mars and Moon are presented. Results show that the developed Hazard Avoidance algorithms are effective at detecting hazards and guiding the lander to a safe landing site.

Lidar-based Hazard Avoidance for Safe Landing on Mars

Hazard avoidance is a key technology for landing large payloads safely on the surface of Mars. During hazard avoidance a lander uses onboard sensors to detect hazards in the landing zone, autonomously selects a safe landing site, and then maneuvers to the new site. Design of a system for hazard avoidance is facilitated by simulation where trades involving sensor and mission requirements can be ...

Real-time Hazard Detection for Landers

Unmanned planetary landers to date have landed "blind"; that is, without the benefit of onboard landing hazard detection and avoidance systems. This constrains landing site selection to very benign terrain, which in turn constrains the scientific agenda of missions. The state of the art Entry, Descent, and Landing (EDL) technology can land a spacecraft on Mars somewhere within a very large land...

Extended Abstract Intelligent Landing Hazard Assessment and Avoidance for Safe Spacecraft Landing

This paper presents a novel multi-sensor information fusion methodology for landing hazard assessment and avoidance. The focus of this research is to analyze hazard characteristics of a planetary surface using imagery data obtained in real-time during spacecraft orbit, descent, or landing. This information is used to enable a spacecraft to safely touchdown on a planetary surface during mission ...

Determination of Terminal Landing Footprint for On-Board Terrain Assessment and Intelligent Hazard Avoidance

In this paper we develop a methodology based on ballistics to estimate the landing footprint associated with the powered terminal descent phase of a Mars soft landing. The analysis is based on an idealized two-impulse thrust maneuver and leads to an analytical expression for the elliptical boundary of the landing footprint. Our goal was to develop a method (with low computational overhead) to e...
